Non-judgement

Non-judgement means that you do not label things, ideas, people or their behavior as right or wrong, good or bad. You just observe them as they are, without evaluating them. This does not mean that we are disappointed, defeated or refuse to put in effort. It is also different from thinking or being positive, we are not looking for the good in everything here, since positive/negative is also a form of judgment we pass, based on our assumptions. Once we master non-judgment, we are more open, more accepting, more curious to new ideas.

As you go through your day, observe the instances when you criticize others or yourself. We are not trying to change anything about ourselves here, we are only attempting to be aware of our tendencies. Notice when you use words like should or should not. Underneath the surface, these are usually associated with our idea of good or bad, right or wrong:

I should not be angry..

My spouse should..

My child should not..

My boss should..

Question yourself and go deeper, every time this happens: Where do these ideas stem from? Who told me this?

  • Keeping a journal will allow you to examine your self-talk and assist in such deeper questioning.

  • Also, do not start judging yourself for having such opinions. It is perfectly okay, we are just trying to be aware of their existence and origin.
