What Does Rest Mean?

📺 Come back late from work, binge watch a TV series, still not feeling energised?

🛌 Getting adequate sleep at night and still feeling low?

🖊 Cannot push yourself out of Writer’s Block?

⏬This might help!

For more of us,

Rest = Sleep 😴

But in addition to sleep (i.e. Physical Rest), there are other forms of rest such as (but not limited to):

🧠 Mental Rest

👀 Sensory Rest

🎨 Creative Rest

🥹 Emotional Rest

If you work on a laptop for 8-9 hours of a day, come back and watch TV, your senses (specially eyes) still do not get a break. Try taking a short, Sensory Break instead (We have a detailed blog about this one.)

😵‍💫If you have been churning out one creative project after another, you might start feeling burnt out and not be getting new ideas. So instead of pushing yourself further, take a break, indulge in some routine, passive activities or consume good, quality content instead of creating- read a book, watch a favourite movie, etc.

🧐Brainstorming, calculations, analysis, etc are mentally intensive activities. Make sure you take 5-10 minutes off every 1-2 hours, to give your mind a break. Go for a walk, have a cup of tea and avoid ruminating about work while you do it.🚶🏻‍♀️Mindful walking and Guided meditations are also good ways of reseting.

🫠If you’ve been dealing with intense emotions, it is vital to give yourself a break there too. It is good to face and process our emotions instead of running away from them. But remember to give yourself some time off. Go meet with friends, watch a light-hearted movie, 💃🏻 dance, sing- blow off some steam before you get back to your inner world.

🧘🏻‍♂️Physical rest also is much more than your regular sleep time at night. It includes restorative exercises, stretches while you’re at your work desk, etc. For fitness enthusiasts, look up Active Rest vs Passive Rest.

⚖️ Like always, this is just to give you a general idea about the spectrum of rest available to you. Your needs will vary according to your lifestyle, nature of work, personal inclinations, etc. There are no fixed rules. Aim for balance. And suit yourself. 🪷
